Jackson Springs
We went to Jackson Springs Park that was the park that Andrew Jackson camped at a long time ago. It joins with the new riverwalk in Macon. We looked at rocks and I saw a lot of feldspar and granitic type rocks! We sifted the soil to see particle size and used water to press it down further and get accurate measurements! The riverwalk trail is the only in Middle Georgia and it has lots of historic places on the trail. Jackson Springs used to encompass from the park up to the Grey Highway. It used to have a zoo.

Community Gardens!
Anyone who has a garden in an urban environment should
test the soil for lead. It should be known however that community gardens are most likely to be in urban areas. Because of this all community gardens should be soil tested often in order to assure healthy growth and consumption. Since lead can be toxic at high concentrations it is important to realize where it came from in order to know the importance of testing. Lead in urban areas is now prominent due to two primary sources: the lead that came from lead-based paint in older buildings (prior to 1978) and auto-emissions or gasoline. While lead is no longer in gasoline ie. unleaded gas being printed on every pump lead persists in soils for long periods of time. There are many documents that talk about soil testing from a basic to more advanced level. One good resource is the Purdue Horti Website .

Peridot
It is an igneous rock and is found in North Carolina, Arizona, and Hawaii within the United States. The chemical composition of peridot is (Mg, Fe)2SiO4, meaning that it is mafic. It has white streaks and is green. It is in the olivine group as evidenced by it's green color. It is the birthstone of August. Peridot ranges in color from light yellow-green to a bright lime green. If it has hues of yellow or brown it is no longer as valuable. It is a semiprecious stone.
It is shown in this picture with basalt.

Rocks
Peridot/Olivine: This is in my birthstone./ It is also a silicate |
Pyrite: Fools Gold. I remember getting really angry when I was younger because I thought I was rich. It is sulfide and has an isometric dipole. |
Amethyst: It is said to protect it's owner from drunkness/intoxication. It is silicate SiO2. |
Saint Cecilia Granite: The most common type of granite that has hornblend, feldspar, and quartz. It is the most common granite used in kitchen countertops. |
